So, it’s happening again! The month of no-spend-at-freaking-at-all.
If you’re a consistent reader of this blog, you are an extremely crazy budgeter and debt-free seeker.
I would like to do this as a year-long experiment in the future, so here is my basic layout.
For the month of February, I will only be spending on:
- necessities, toiletry items
- food/groceries, no organic stuff for the time being
- phone bill
- TV: we pay for Netflix only
Traditionally, we would omit our entertainment money entirely for the month, this meaning our going-out-to-eat category, our fun money, any spontaneous expenses. We are, however, reserving our entertainment money due to a bachelor and bachelorette party for my husband’s brother and our future sister-in-law. We aren’t adding a separate category for the parties, we are just replacing it with our entertainment. My husband and I will be splitting the cost of this and will only be using cash throughout the day/evening. Once the money is gone, it’s gone. No using any form of a card whatsoever. Yes, even debit cards (we only have one of these each).
What I will NOT be spending money on:
- expensive food
- going out to eat frequently
- books (this will be a hard one….but I have so many on my shelf that I need to read anyways)
- house decor (sad face)
Why would I do this, you ask?
I am on a crazy-strong path to rid my debt in the next year. My 2016 will be filled with crazy amounts of writing on this subject because I want everyone to live without chains. You don’t deserve to be enslaved to a lender called Sallie Mae. You don’t deserve for all of your hard-earned money to go to these companies without any for yourself. Set yourself up for success now and sacrifice large expenses now so you can live on a path of wealth and early retirement as soon as you can.
By having a no-spend-February challenge, I am reflecting and setting up a good habitual goal of “I don’t need that.” My Project Pan is under the works, also, and that is helping me save money instead of over-purchasing items. This is also helping me on my goal of living as minimalist as possible.
Yup. There you have it. Hardest month of ever? Maybe. But I bet you it will be rewarding. Tell me what some of your tips and tricks if you’ve done a no-spend challenge before!
