When Lauren isn’t spending time organizing, you can find her playing musical instruments with her 8 month-old daughter Amelia, baking something sweet or trying to mimic her husband’s english accent. Originally from Canada, Lauren now calls California her home and loves the constant sunshine and warm temperatures (although she admits to missing snow during the Christmas season).

When I became a full time homemaker I quickly realized that I needed to develop ways to make my home run smoothly (with little effort, money and time) while at the same time honouring my minimalistic personality. I developed a set of rules to live by that would assist me in keeping our home simple and cared for, and I hope that some of these rules may be helpful to you at your home!
-
Find decorative items that you can repurpose throughout your home. Something that works on your mantelpiece can also look amazing on your dining room table!
-
Stick with neutral colors around your home. Staying within the same palette allows you to move objects around freely and makes it easier to streamline the look you’re going for.
-
Stay away from multiple products around your home. I only have one of something at any given time – one brand of shower cleaner, one brand of dish soap etc. This ensures that I am always aware of when I’m running low on an item and can re order it quickly.
-
Write the purchase date on cleaning products so you know how long a product will last. This habit has allowed me to anticipate something I may need to reorder and place it on my list before it’s actually run out.
-
If you do one thing each night before bed, try and clear all surfaces of your kitchen. In the morning, seeing a clear kitchen will allow you to start your day off on the right foot.
-
The adage ‘a place for everything; and everything in its place’ is one of the mottos I live by. Everything in your home deserves a place to ‘live’. Find the most efficient place to keep things around the house and set a habit to put them back when you’re done.
-
Don’t over stuff a room. It’s so easy to add too much furniture and decor into a space. Allow the space to be beautiful, just as it is.
-
I don’t own every appliance and kitchen gadget available, and I prefer it this way. Keeping things minimal in the kitchen allows me to have more counter space and storage space, save the money that I would’ve spent on those items and allocate it to something else.
Sticking to these rules that I’ve set for myself and my family allows us to live a very simple, minimal lifes. We have virtually no physical or visual clutter to deal with so when we are together we can focus solely on each other and spend very little time on maintaining objects around our home.
I hope some of these tips have sparked ideas in you, and that you may be able to implement one or two in your own home!
Yours in minimalism,
Lauren
